Brandon Chamber of Commerce Industry Teachers Educator Day
Milwalkee Area Technical College's ATE project, 21st Century Urban Technology Education Project,"Get A Life"

The Brandon Chamber sponsors a professional day of tours, talks and round table discussions for Hillsoborough County high school counselors every February. FLATE participated by giving the 30 counselors a presentation about the new Center, its mission and how it will be focusing on technical career paths, particlarly those related to manufacturing. Synergistic Lab Career & Technical Education lab training
Osceola MS, Seminole, FL
Eight to ten middle school teachers from Pinellas, Hillsborough and St. Lucie counties will attend the training for new equipment platforms to support middle school technical education programs. FLATE staff will help to provide the teachers with additional materials to support manufacturing education and career paths.

The FLATE staff, principal investigators, outreach managers and representatives from the community met for a day long brainstroming session to begin developing a plan for meet the outreach deliverables of the center. In attendance were, Eric Roe, director, Marilyn Barger, executive director, Laura Moses, Sr. Staff Assistant; Brad Jenkins, principal investigator (SPC); Richard Gilbert, FLATE principal investigator (USF); Hugh Rogers and Michael Sullivan, FLATE Outreach Managers; and Mark Gaudio, Jaeger Corportation, and Linda Manci, community representative.

Hillsoborough County Tech Prep Middle School Students visit Manufacturing Technology Labs
On Wednesday, October 27, 2004 over 150 middle school students will visit the Brandon Campus of HCC to explore the educational opportuinites in Associate of Science Degree Programs. The seventh and eighth grade students will visit a factory automation demonstration and be provided materials on career opportunities in Manufacturing and related advanced technologies.

June 2003 - IT Girls Camp Visit the image gallery
Girl Tech is a one week day camp for middle school girls focused on topics of information technology and business communications. This year 12 girls participated during the week June 9-13. The girls learned about computer hardware and software, built web pages, took a field trip to a local business facility. Girl Tech also visited the Manufacturing Technology Program where they learned about how microchips are made and the clean rooms that they are made in. the girls also did a process simulation exercise for doping of semiconductor materials. 2003 was the second year of this program focused on young girls, information technology, and behavior in the workplace and sponsored by the School District of Hillsborough County.

June 2003 - Governor's Gifted Summer Frontiers
of Engineering program

HCC was awarded a state grant for a 2003 summer program entitled "Frontiers in Engineering". Middleton High School, the county magnet school for Engineering and Technology, was a key partner in this project. Over 40 rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, from Middleton and other area high schools attended the two-week summer camp. The students were introduced to various areas of engineering including manufacturing, bioengineering, nanotechnology, aerospace and semiconductor fabrication with lectures from local engineers, and FLATE faculty from the local high schools, HCC, and USF. The group visited the Kennedy Space Center, the College of Engineering at USF, and Uniroyal Optoelectric where LED's are manufactured. During the camp sessions, time every day was allocated for project work. Student group projects were presented on the last day to family, friends and faculty and all students where given certificates of completion as well as a graphing calculator.

BAMA Scholarship Award Night

The BAMA Annual Awards and Scholarship Banquet was help on Thurs June 19, 2003 at the Radisson Hotel on Roosevelt Blvd. BAMA awards several scholarships every year to bay area students who will pursue higher education in manufacturing or related technical fields. This year, BAMA awarded 3 scholarships of $1250. Education, not only for its members, but for students is an important aspect of BAMA's mission, which reads "Providing Tampa Bay's Manufacturing Community With Quality Educational And Training Programs, Events With High Take-Away-Value, And Forums For Networking And Information Exchange"

The 2003 winners each received $1250 towards their higher education. They are:

1. Ms. Ruby L. Blauvelt, Largo High School
2. Ms. Toni D. Palmerino, St. Petersburg High School
3. Mr. Michael B. Wright,Tarpon Springs High School

The three BAMA scholarship winners are planning to attend public universities in Florida.
