Robbins Wood Preserving and Manufacturing Company, headquartered in Tampa, has acquired Pine Wood Products, Inc. of Gainesville, Georgia. This facility joins six other wood treating plants operated by Robbins in three states.

Concrete Maker to Invest $11 Million in Plant

Duratek Precast Structures LLC in Brooksville has finalized plans to build a new manufacturing facility in the Hernando county Airport RailPark. Duratek is a manufacturer of pre-cast concrete wall panels used in residential, commercial and road building projects. The company plans to construct a 75,000-square-foot facility on a 14-acre industrial site. The company will invest more than $11 million in capital improvements. It has 125 employees in Florida and will add 90 additional employees at the new facility. The new facility will incorporate state-of-the-art European technology in a highly automated production process that will enable Duratek the flexibility to manufacture a variety of precast concrete products.

Hanson opens Baker county plant

The opening of Hanson Roof Tile's $24 million manufacturing plant in Sanderson marks Hanson's fifth facility in Florida, a plant that will employ 80 workers at full capacity. Construction on the 120,000-square-foot facility on an 18-acre site in Sanderson, about halfway between Jacksonville and Lake City, began in February 2006 and machinery was complete in June. The plant is able to produce 27.5 million tiles annually.

Company moving ambulance plant to Orlando

A manufacturing plant is moving to Orlando. Specialty vehicle maker Collins Industries says it will close its ambulance manufacturing plant in Hutchinson, Kansas by the end of April. The company says it's moving all ambulance production to Orlando, Florida.

Jabil acquires Taiwanese manufacturer
Tampa Bay Business Journal Jabil Circuit Inc.'s acquisition of outstanding shares and plants of an electro-mechanical manufacturing company is a done deal. One of the companies' subsidiaries bought Taiwan Green Point Enterprises Co. Ltd. for $109 a share. The previously announced acquisition includes nine Asian plants, including seven located in China and one in both Taiwan and Malaysia.

AWI Releases Florida’s employment/unemployment report for November 2006

Florida’s unemployment rate in November 2006 was 3.3 percent, up slightly from the previous month and down 0.2 percentage points from 3.5 percent a year ago. The increase is largely due to new workers coming into the job market faster than employers could absorb them and weakness in residential construction
In November 2006 the size of Florida's labor force increased by 21,000. Overall job growth in November continued to be strong, as the state added 211,400 jobs over the year, growing at 2.7 percent, slightly more than twice the national rate. The national rate of growth was 1.3 percent for the same period. Florida's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November 2006 of 3.3 percent was 1.2 percentage points lower than the national rate of 4.5 percent.
Job growth by sector was led by Professional and Business Services (+58,400) and Leisure and Hospitality (+31,000 jobs). The Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Miami Beach MSA led the state in employment growth (+51,200 jobs, +2.1 percent), followed by the Orlando-Kissimmee and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSAs with over-the-year job growth in November 2006 of +39,800 jobs and +20,800 jobs, respectively. In November 2006, Walton County had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.2 percent. Madison County was the highest at 8.0 percent. Medtronic buys manufacturing assets
Jacksonville Business journal Medtronic Xomed Inc. has reached an agreement to buy some of the manufacturing assets of a Massachusetts medical products company for up to $34 million. Medtronic will acquire the assets to manufacture the EndoSheath products, used by ear, nose and throat specialists, fromVision-Sciences Inc. and move production to its Jacksonville facility.
